Friday Randomness, My Views on “Diet”

Life got a bit busy yesterday and i tried to go to bed early due to some horrible insomnia I’ve  been struggling with.. so I waited to post today, sorry!

Workouts:

Wednesdays workout was front squats (95 lbx10reps, 105 lbx7, 115lbx7 reps, 135lbx5 reps, 145×5,135×3) followed by 3 quick rounds of
5 burpees+sled push+5 burpees+sled push
6 toes to bar+10 jump lunges per leg (20 total) until partner completed the burpee+sled push round
Perfect for a quick sweat and I especially love anything involving sprints.

Yesterday was a cardio/active rest morning, with a quick pullup+Turkish get up superset last night before grabbing pizza at Uncle Maddios . 🙂 Today I was off work, so I woke my body up with 10 minutes on the lateral elliptical followed by some body weight exercises. I’ll see how I feel to decide whether or not I want to lift later (still behind on sleep and don’t want to push it too much). Since I’m off 20150509_133914 (2)today, I will get some pool and reading in for about 30 minutes! 🙂

Body&Nutrition: I also wanted to touch real quick on my outlook on diet and nutrition. I get asked all of the time how “strict” I am with food because I enjoy working out. The answer is… I’m not at all! My basic approach to nutrition is to eat a diet full of foods that are as unprocessed as possible. I enjoy whole eggs (yes, with the yolks!) breakfast002for breakfast almost every morning. In fact, pictured on the left was my breakfast this morning – two cage free eggs, topped with avocados, nutritional yeast, and a coffee seasoning from Trader Joe’s. I prefer my egg yolks runny because the cholesterol is left the least oxidized… & chalky yolks are yucky to me anyways! Cholesterol is actually one of the nutrients that has been demonized for so long, and yet some of the healthiest, longest-lived people have had high cholesterol levels and brains that are better able to function as they age. I’ll save my cholesterol rant for another day, though.

absI enjoy oatmeal, fruit, full-fat dairy, organ meats (heart, liver, etc), steak, porkchops, COW HEART, and YES, carbs – which are NOT the enemy, especially if you are active. I don’t love super sweet foods or desserts but I don’t ever hesitate to have ice cream or dessert if I want it! Same goes for beer – we don’t drink cheap watery beer at our place. Instead, we buy full-bodied, great tasting, higher abv and yes, higher “calorie” beers! And it only takes one or two to be satisfied. I’ve watched people drink 2-3x the number of “light beers” and there is nothing healthier about that.

Bottom line is… I stay active (not just working out/lifting, but playing soccer, walking wherever I can, taking stairs, standing), eat healthy MOST of the time, try to get proper rest, and don’t overthink things.

Trader Joe’s Haul/Favorites this May

Good afternoon – I’m typing this up as I’m watching some dark rain clouds and storms roll across Atlanta. It’s making me feel a little tired because it looks so much later outside than it actually is! That’s alright though, because it gives me an excuse to stay inside and finish my post.

Spinach & Kale Greek Yogurt Dip – simply delicious. I’m a fan of Greek yogurt based dips, and this one has been a weekly staple in the fridge. Great for a quick post workout snack on the plantain chips, carrots, tortilla chips, crackers… you name it!

raw milk Cheddar Cheese – this is also a go to for Jeremy & I. We like to eat it melted on eggs, on burgers, or just cuts slices and eating them plain while we are prepping dinner. I also like the fact that it is unpasteurized, meaning many of beneficial factors, including probiotics, are left intact. TJ’s Roasted Plantain Chips and Chunky Spicy Guacamole– Basic and perfect for potato chip cravings. Slightly thicker than a typical potato chip with just the right amount of salt. I dip these in salsa, the TJ’s Spinach & Kale Greek Yogurt Dip, or eat them straight from the bag. The Guac is not really spicy at all, but delicious and fresh tasting!

tjfruit)052615_smDried fruits – I am not a fan of over-sweetened dried fruits, as I think that the sugar already in the fruits is sweet enough; why add more sugar? That’s why I love some of the dried fruit options at TJ’s. My current favorite is probably the TJ’s Dried Persimmons, which have 6 grams of fiber per serving. I just discovered fresh persimmons last year & have trouble finding them, especially now that they are out of season. These make a perfect sweet snack, along with the Dried Unsweetened Just Mango slices, which remind me of a healthier version of the flattened fruit snacks I enjoyed as a kid.

Stockyard Otj_beer_052615atmeal Stout – Jeremy’s pick, but I love it too, even in the summer – it may seem to go against the popular summer beer choices, but this stout is refreshing. A solid 6 pack for $6.99 – really hard to beat and I put it “up there” on my list as one of my favorite stouts.

Ancient Grains Pizza – We love this pizza and try to have one in the freezer for nights when we are low on time or short on groceries; for $4.99, this pizza is a perfect option for minimal food prep. We just preheat the oven, bake for 12-14 minutes,

tj_pizza_052615and BAM – a great meal option. There are 3 servings, each with a bonus 5 grams of fiber with your pizza fix. The crust has a great texture and I love that you can tell there are whole grains in there.

Memorial Day

I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend and this Memorial Day so far. Please don’t forget to stop to think about all who have given their lives in service to our country.image

I got to enjoy Saturday afternoon at the Jazz Festival after kicking around the soccer ball for a bit, but unfortunately had a dead camera battery, so I only have phone pictures. Regardless, the weekend was beautiful, sunny, and the temperature remained in the upper 70’s to low 80’s. It was a perfect weekend to be outside, and Jeremy & I took advantage of the weather to walk almost everywhere, play pick up soccer, and enjoy the music in the park. It’s such a blessing to be able to get outside and move, and we walked several miles every day!

I also managed to snag some Chobani yogurt and coupons! I tried the Pineapple Coconut and it was delicious!

We have plans to celebrate my dad’s birthday (which was last week but they just got back in town) later this evening, and I picked up some goodies from Trader Joes to share with the family. I’ll share some of my favorite Trader Joes finds tomorrow, but it’s one of my favorite spots to snag some great food (and drinks!).

Off to my parent’s house then to get some rest!

3 Day Weekend Plans, Atlanta Jazz Fest.

Good evening!

Memorial Day weekend has arrived! Jeremy and I are staying in town this weekend. Plus, he works a couple hours on Saturday and Sunday and the money isn’t worth giving up. But that’s perfectly fine because Atlanta has plenty going on, and all within walking distance.

Today was pretty laid back, so I won’t bore you with my work and excitement. My legs were so sore from my front squats on Wednesday that I could barely walk “normal” today (SECOND DAY SORENESS IS ALWAYS THE WORST FOR ME), so I started my day with a quick 20 minute workout on the spin bike with some additional upper body work (ring dips, pushups, pullups) when I picked Jeremy up after work. I did, however, upload some new artwork to my illustration portfolio that you can check out if you’d like to see some of the creative work I like to do!

Tonight we are planning on catching the second Hawks game with some friends, and this weekend is also the Atlanta Jazz Festival in Piedmont Park.

atljazzfest2010The funny thing is, I had just uploaded an old poster I had done as a mock-up for the jazz festival in 2010 onto my Illustration portfolio & completely forgot that this weekend is the 2015 Festival. The weather is supposed to be gorgeous so expect some photos from our walks to Piedmont Park for the music & maybe some pickup soccer as well, for sure!

Victory Bar Review – Oatmeal Chocolate Chip

This morning I woke up and did a quick 12 minute lateral elliptical + 5 minute spin bike cardio session at my apartment gym, then grabbed a bite to eat before work.

After my quick workout this morning, I tried the Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Victory Bar from OhYeah! that was new to me, but I’ve been wanting to try for a while! I tend to compare bars like these to Quest bars simply because they follow the approximately 20 grams of Protein, 20 grams of Fiber rule.

Wednesday Quirks and Breakfast

Good evening!

Weirdness Wednesday? Okay, yes, so I’m “weird” for wanting to share a few of these, but while attempting to get dressed this morning I realized I do have a few quirks and habits that I figured would be fun to share.

  • I refuse to untie my shoes sometimes, and try to yank them off and squeeze them back on because I feel like I “waste” time having to untie and retie with my strange double knot… But it’s silly because it can take me longer to try to wiggle them back on,plus it ruins the shoe and can be painful… I’ll work on this!
  • “Cavemanning” steaks and other cuts of meat...and salads too! I love eating with my hands and tearing my food apart, and end up going through waaay too many napkins sometimes.

  • Doodles and sketches ALL over my notes when in classes. Most of the time, it’s a dolphin or a killer whale… So I may be a little obsessed. But it DOES help me focus.
  • Hollyisms. Words I make up or combine (such a troublems = problem + troubles; pronounce trawb-lehms). They sound like nonsense, and my husbands and best friends are used to me using these terms… Until I use them in conversation in public, making people think I’m crazy.

 

 

In other news, I also need to share with you the greatness that was my breakfast… Farm fresh eggs, gifted to me from my dad – and there’s a GREEN egg!

My workout today was simple – morning cardio (lateral elliptical) with sprints, and PM front squats.

For now, I’m out to enjoy a cold one and… GO HAWKS!

First post; a quick tabata

First, I want to share a quick photo of the awesome storm that rolled through Atlanta last night. No damage here, but some awesome looking clouds!

Since I am between semesters, the past couple of weeks have been mostly dedicated to some needed stress relief (including workouts!), a vacation to Pensacola, and some lab research hours thrown in here and there.

Today I was still sore from Jeremy and I’s two soccer games this past Saturday & Sunday, but decided a quick run to the gym and mostly upper body tabata would be ideal. I did a quick bench press strength lift, then I proceeded to do the following tabata with Jeremy:

Arms Afire Tabata – 20 seconds on, 10 seconds off for 8 rounds of each exercise, 32 rounds total

  • Ring rows – as close to parallel with the floor as possible
  • Toes to Bar – slow and full range of motion
  • Burpees – full push up and tuck jump
  • Kettlebell Swings – 35 lb for me, alternating between single arm and double arm

Left me with a decent burn, for sure! Followed this with a cool down walk home and a lunch of eggs and homemade marshmallows.

Now I’m off to do work for a client, with a little more energy thanks to this morning’s quick sweat. Let me know if you try the work out. Jeremy and I rotated through the exercises so that we both started and ended with something different.
